What Are Head Lice

If your scalp itches intensely and you feel the sensation of small creatures crawling on your head—both common symptoms of head lice infestation—it’s likely you’re in need of lice treatment.

Head lice—or head louse in its singular form—are tiny, wingless parasitic insects that attach to human head hair and consume blood from the human scalp. When the head louse feeds, it leaves behind a saliva secretion that causes an allergic reaction in humans, leading to small, red bumps and extreme scalp itchiness.

Head lice are a global problem found commonly in schoolchildren ages 3 to 11 and their household members. They are most commonly transmitted by close personal contact with a lice-infected individual or by sharing personal belongings such as:

  • Brushes
  • Combs
  • Towels
  • Hats
  • Hoodies
  • Headphones
  • Clothing
  • Bedding
  • Furniture

Because head lice don’t have wings, they cannot jump or fly. Instead, they use their claws to latch onto individual hairs or threads of clothing and crawl from host to host. Household pets, like dogs and cats, do not spread head lice.

Head lice are highly contagious. If left untreated, they will continue to grow in number exponentially. When feeding, a female louse can live for about 30 days, producing about six nits (lice eggs) each day. Off the head, and detached from their food source, head lice will die within three days.

If you suspect that you or a family member has head lice, we recommend that you seek mobile lice treatment immediately.

HOW TO IDENTIFY HEAD LICE

How to Identify Head Lice

There are more than 3,000 louse species in existence, but only three are known to affect humans:

  • Head lice—live in human hair, close to the scalp
  • Body lice—live in clothing and bedding; most commonly found on people who aren’t able to bathe or wash their laundry regularly
  • Pubic lice—also called crabs, these lice live on the skin and hair around the pubic area

Household pets, like dogs and cats, do not spread human head lice.

What do head lice look like?

Head lice are tiny, parasitic insects measuring about the size of a sesame seed (2-3 millimeters). They are wingless creatures and move about by grasping onto hair or threads with their claws.

Because head lice are tiny and often in motion, they can be difficult to spot with the naked eye. The best way to detect them is through a wet check, segmenting hair with professional-grade lice and nit comb.

Nits, or head lice eggs, are typically easier to detect. Less than a millimeter long (measuring roughly the size of dandruff) and oval in shape, they range from white to brown in color. Nits have a sticky residue, causing them to stay attached the hair until you seek lice treatment.

The CDC estimates 6 to 12 million head lice infestations occur in the United States each year. Head lice are highly contagious and are most often contracted by preschool students, elementary students, and those who work at daycares or schools with young children.

If you believe you or a family member has head lice, it’s important that you contact a trained lice removal professional as soon as possible to receive lice treatment. Lice Care Solution offers same-day mobile lice removal appointments in Houston, Austin, San Antonio and Dallas to treat for lice and nits and teach you and your family how to get rid of lice.

How to Check For Lice

How To Get Rid Of Lice Naturally

There are many over-the-counter lice treatments, lice shampoos, and home remedies for lice. Unfortunately, many of these lice treatment methods contain toxic chemicals, and without lots of lice removal experience, one can easily miss a few nits (louse eggs) and inadvertently create a colony of “super lice” that are resistant to lice treatment.

Below we have summarised the steps on how to remove lice using a wet combing technique that we use in all of our treatments as wet combing is the most effective way to get rid of head lice

How To Check For Head Lice

Common symptoms of head lice Head lice are highly contagious, particularly among children and their families. The most common symptoms of a head lice infestation include:

  • Extreme itching on the scalp, neck and ears
  • Small red bumps on the scalp, neck and ears
  • Feeling movement on your scalp
  • Visible lice in your hair or on your scalp
  • Visible nits (lice eggs) in your hair
  • Sores developed from excessive scratching

Checking for head lice typically takes between 10 and 30 minutes, depending on the thickness and length of hair. Here are some easy-to-follow steps to determine whether the person you are checking for lice will need lice treatment: Instructions:

You will need

(1) towel
(1) wide-tooth comb
(1) medical-grade lice and nit comb
(1) bottle of lice shampoo
(1) bottle of lice conditioner
(1) wet paper towel
(1) zip-lock bag
(1) person to administer the lice check Before receiving a head check, the person getting checked for head lice should complete the following two steps:

  1. Wash their hair in the shower with lice shampoo.
  2. After toweling off from the shower, the person getting checked should sit on a stool or low-backed chair.

How to Get Rid Of Head Lice Instructions for the person administering the lice check:

1. Drape a fresh, dry towel around the recipient’s shoulders.

2. Saturate the recipient’s hair with a generous amount of conditioner. (Side note: This type of head check is called a “wet check” because lubrication is used to assist in detecting and demobilizing the head lice. While wet checks are often more time consuming than “dry checks”—head checks that do not utilize conditioner—they are also significantly more effective when accurately determining whether or not someone has head lice.)

3. Use a wide-tooth comb to organize hair, combing all hair in one direction (front to back).

4. Use a nit comb to comb hair from ear to ear, starting at the sideburns, if present. If you find any head lice, simply comb them out and dispatch them onto a damp paper towel. Then seal the paper towel, and the head lice, in a ziplock bag.

5. Flip hair over and comb forward all hair (back to front), using a wide-tooth comb.

6. Comb hair from the nape of the neck to the front of the ear using a nit comb. Dispatch any lice you may find onto a wet paper towel.

If you find any head lice or nits, we recommend that you contact Lice Care Solutions immediately to book your same-day appointment. Lice are highly contagious and will multiply exponentially if left unchecked.

Lice Care Solutions offers an in-home lice removal service that uses an all-natural, non-toxic lice treatment to get rid of lice. If you or a loved one has head lice, we recommend that reach out to a professionally trained lice removal technician for lice treatment.

We also offer our Head Lice Removal DIY Kits so you can remove head lice and nits in the comfort of your own home! It’s important to us that everyone has access to lice prevention education and tools—even if they don’t have time to schedule an appointment with one of our mobile lice removal technicians or do not live in one of our areas of mobile coverage. Our clients now have access to our signature, all-natural products at a very reasonable.

Note: A complete list of instructions come with each kit.
