HOW TO CHECK FOR HEAD LICE

How to Check For Lice

Common symptoms of head lice

Head lice are highly contagious, particularly among children and their families. The most common symptoms of a head lice infestation include:

  • Extreme itching on the scalp, neck and ears
  • Small red bumps on the scalp, neck and ears
  • Feeling movement on your scalp
  • Visible lice in your hair or on your scalp
  • Visible nits (lice eggs) in your hair
  • Sores developed from excessive scratching

How to check for head lice

Checking for head lice typically takes between 10 and 30 minutes, depending on the thickness and length of hair. Here are some easy-to-follow steps to determine whether the person you are checking for lice will need lice treatment:

Instructions: You will need (1) towel, (1) wide-tooth comb, (1) medical-grade lice and nit comb, (1) bottle of lice shampoo, (1) bottle of lice conditioner, (1) wet paper towel, (1) zip-lock bag, (1) person to administer the lice check

Before receiving a head check, the person getting checked for head lice should complete the following two steps:

  1. Wash their hair in the shower with lice shampoo.
  2. After toweling off from the shower, the person getting checked should sit on a stool or low-backed chair.

How to Get Rid Of Head Lice

Instructions for the person administering the lice check:

  1. Drape a fresh, dry towel around the recipient’s shoulders.
  2. Saturate the recipient’s hair with a generous amount of conditioner. (Side note: This type of head check is called a “wet check” because lubrication is used to assist in detecting and demobilizing the head lice. While wet checks are often more time consuming than “dry checks”—head checks that do not utilize conditioner—they are also significantly more effective when accurately determining whether or not someone has head lice.)
  3. Use a wide-tooth comb to organize hair, combing all hair in one direction (front to back).
  4. Use a nit comb to comb hair from ear to ear, starting at the side burns, if present. If you find any head lice, simply comb them out and dispatch them onto a damp paper towel. Then seal the paper towel, and the head lice, in a zip lock bag.
  5. Flip hair over and comb forward all hair (back to front), using a wide-tooth comb.
  6. Comb hair from the nape of the neck to the front of the ear using a nit comb. Dispatch any lice you may find onto a wet paper towel.
  7. If you find any head lice or nits, we recommend that you contact Lice Care Solutions immediately to book your same-day appointment. Lice are highly contagious and will multiply exponentially, if left unchecked.

How to get rid of lice

There are many over-the-counter lice treatments, lice shampoos, and home remedies for lice. Unfortunately, many of these lice treatment methods contain toxic chemicals, and without lots of lice removal experience, one can easily miss a few nits (louse eggs) and inadvertently create a colony of “super lice” that are resistant to lice treatment.

Good news is, we have your back! Lice Care Solutions is an in-home lice removal service that uses an all-natural, non-toxic lice treatment to get rid of lice.

If you or a loved one has head lice, we recommend that reach out to a professionally trained lice removal technician for lice treatment. Call us now to book your same-day lice removal appointment in Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Dallas,  Jacksonville, Tampa and Orlando  .
